Top 10 Things To Get For Your New Puppy

New year, new puppy?

For many new pet parents, getting a new puppy is a milestone to remember. For others, it can be an exhilarating yet stressful period of time. So, now that you have just finished selecting your puppy, the easy part is done. But, how do you prepare for your new family member?

Nagging questions such as what to get, what and how to feed and how to train my puppy are commonly-faced dilemmas that new pet parents would encounter at the start of their pet parent ownership journey. Of course, the easiest way is to get everything and one of each type, but we all know that is not the most economically feasible choice, right? ?

Thus, here are our ‘Top 10 Things To Get For Your New Puppy’, so that you can begin to prepare for your puppy even before your puppy comes home!

  1. FOOD: Orijen Puppy Food

Nutrition is the building block of all organisms. A growing puppy needs all the nutrition that it can get. Loaded with the richly-nourishing proteins and fats that all puppies require for peak health, ORIJEN’s award-winning low-glycemic puppy food supports lean muscle mass while supplying all of the energy your puppy needs to take on his exciting world.

This is our number one choice of puppy food. Tried and tested by all our puppy clients!

  1. CRATE: Childstar Safety Playpen for Pets

Every puppy deserves to have an area that he or she can call home within your house. The recommended size of the crate should be at least 4 times the length of your puppy from the nose to the tip of the tail and at least 2.5 times the height of the puppy. Also, the puppy should not be able to rest his or her paws on the edge of the crate when he or she stands up. If he or she is able to do so, you would need a bigger crate. We recommend heavier crates over plastic crates as they are too light, making them prone to be shifted around and paint-coated metal crates over wooden crates as the poorer quality ones tend to splinter off over time.

  1. TOILET: Richell Training Step Pee Tray  and Janp Drypets Absorbent Pee Pads

The pee tray and the pee pads are the two must-haves when attempting to train your puppy to pee and poo in an appropriate area.

For the Pee Tray, it needs to be light and easy to clean, while being the correct size to accommodate for your puppy’s growth. It is always better to get a bigger tray as opposed to a smaller one.

For the Pee Pads, it needs to be absorbent and fitting to the size of the pee tray that you are getting. Please do not substitute this with newspaper, as they might learn to associate all newspapers with the toilet and they tend to repel urine too.

For the Bowl, you would require a Pet-Safe Bowl with a firm rubber base at the bottom to prevent the bowl from slipping around during mealtime.

For the Water Dispenser, we have found that it is best to get a water dispenser for cages so that it doesn’t dirty the fur below the chin when the dog is drinking. The two-way nozzle gives your puppy greater convenience - it can choose to drink from both inside or outside of the crate!
