The Coconut Oil has recently been in the spotlight for its versatility in dealing with common pet issues that includes skin problems and digestion issues. We will now reveal the secrets hidden within the seemingly-ordinary husk of this refreshing tropical fruit!
Coconut Oil consists of mainly saturated fats and Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) (Lauric Acid, Capric Acid, Caprylic Acid, Myristic Acid and Palmitic), with traces of unsaturated fatty acids, such as monounsaturated fatty acids (Oleic Acid) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (Linoleic Acid).
Not when it comes to Coconut Oil! The main components of Coconut Oil are saturated fats and MCTs which are considered as healthy fats that offers an abundance of health benefits across the various body functions.
Most of the benefits come from the MCTs within saturated fats:
• Lauric Acid has antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties
• Capric and Caprylic acid are best known for their anti-fungal effects
• MCTs balance the thyroid, gently elevating metabolism and helping overweight dogs lose weight
• MCTs act as a source of fuel and energy, empowering sedentary dogs with energy
With antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal agents present, the Coconut Oil prevents general infection and diseases. Also, being able to regulate and balance insulin levels, the Coconut Oil effectively prevents and control diabetes, keeping your pets’ weight in check. In addition, consuming the Coconut Oil significantly reduces instances of joint problems. At the same time, the Coconut Oil promotes normal thyroid function that regulates metabolism and growth of your dogs and cats.
Daily intake of Coconut Oil enhances the digestive systems of pets, allowing better nutrient absorption from their diet. It helps in the healing of weak stomach and digestive disorders, such as inflammatory bowel syndrome and colitis (inflammation of the lining of the colon). Furthermore, with the ability to reduce or eliminate bad breath in dogs and hairballs for cats, what else can’t this Coconut Oil do?!
Loaded with plenty of Fatty Acids, the Coconut Oil certainly packs a punch when dealing with various skin conditions including eczema, flea allergies, contact dermatitis, itchy skin, yeast and fungal infections. It also reduces pet allergic reactions, doggy odour while improving skin health, giving dogs and cats a sleek and glossy coat.
Apart from taking it orally, the Coconut Oil can also be applied directly onto the dogs’ and cats’ skin for the healing of cuts, wounds, hot spots, dry skin and hair, bites and stings. For good results, apply to the affected area and let the oil absorb for about five minutes. After the five minutes, rinse off with clean water and dry the skin area thoroughly. A little shampoo may also be used to remove the excess oil.
Pet parents should start by giving a tiny amount per day (a quarter of a teaspoon) for your pets to adjust to the diet.
A sudden introduction of excessive Coconut Oil to their diet may cause diarrhoea or greasy stools. As Coconut Oil kills bacteria, viruses, parasites, yeasts, and fungi, your pets may respond negatively to the detoxification property of the coconut oil. It is important to note the signs of detoxing too rapidly may include lethargy, headaches, flu-like symptoms, fatigue, and diarrhoea.
It is recommended to gradually increase the intake to about 1 teaspoon per 4.5KG, or 1 tablespoon per 30 pounds of body weight daily. It may also be helpful to give the small amounts of coconut oil in divided doses throughout the day. Coconut oil is best given together with food.
Cats in general would love the taste of Coconut Oil. However, for finicky cats, put a dab of coconut oil on her paw before or after meals and they would lick it off without hassle!
