Does your Pet need any Supplements? (Bone, Coat, Digestives, Vitamins)

Pawrus - Supplements for Pets

From the moment you get a new pet, the common idea is for pet sellers to recommend all kinds of supplements for your new fur kid. However, what kind of supplement is really necessary? In this article, we try to explain the common ailments that might afflict your new family member.  More importantly, we clarify the most important question that pet parents want to know - What kind of supplements should I buy that are safe and suitable for my dog or cat to eat?

1. Bone Maintenance and Joint Care

Having a pet who possesses healthy and active joints in their old age is the wish of every pet owner. Playing fetch, taking walks and performing tricks; these are all common activities that owners would do on a daily basis with their beloved pet buddy.

The most common ailment which afflicts most dogs and cats is hip dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is an abnormal formation of the hip socket that, in its more severe form, can eventually cause crippling lameness and painful arthritis of the joints. Left unchecked, the canine’s caput experiences a partial and incomplete fit with the acetabulum, which causes unintended tear and friction within the joint as it moves.

Most research done in the pet industry has directed the main cause of hip dysplasia to be hereditary. However, recent findings has pivoted towards the environment as a secondary variable, with negative characteristics such as obesity, injury at a young age, overextension of the hip joint, ligament tear and repetitive motion on growing joints such as running with puppies under the age of 1 year.

To mitigate the negative impacts caused by hip dysplasia, a recommended substance used frequently in response to human arthritis is glucosamine. Made specifically for effective joint care, Kala Health Arthrix contains Glucosamine HCI. Proven in clinical studies to be beneficial in the treatment of joint discomforts, the Glucosamine HCl is a superior form of glucosamine. Glucosamine, an amino sugar, promotes the formation and repair of cartilage, and aids in reducing stiffness. Our vegetarian glucosamine is NOT derived from crustaceans (shrimp, crabs, etc.), making it save for animals sensitive to shellfish.

2. Skin Nourishment

For any pet, the skin is the window to its true beauty. The skin comprises of thin, fine hairs that makes up the pet’s luxurious coat, forms its majestic mane that certainly charms anyone who comes close.

Singapore’s unforgiving weather causes the dog’s skin to become flaky and dry, thereby creating a ‘hot spot’. Furthermore, the irritation would prompt the dog to bite and lick the area, exacerbating the hot spot even more. This phenomenon is the most common amongst dogs with thick undercoats (e.g. Golden Retrievers, Mastiffs, Chow Chows, etc.). To remedy these hot spots, corticosteroid applications or topical antibiotics are applied and taken after clipping the hair around the affected area.

Pawrus Singapore - Hot Spots Hot Spots

To prevent hot spots from forming on your pet, it is necessary to take skin supplements that reduce itchiness and allergic reactions including atopic dermatitis. Composed of a plethora of Omega 3, 6 and 9, with Vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B12, E, Kala Health Dermatrix makes feeding easy and fun as it can be given to your pets in a variety of forms, with a meal, as a treat, or even as a reward for training!

3. Digestive Enzymes

Strong gastrointestinal health is essential for the digestion of food and treats for your furry pet. Common nightmarish ailments that plague dog and cat parents include: vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, loss of appetite, involuntarily passing of bowels, etc. All of these adverse reactions are in response to an inability to break down food into smaller pieces for an effective and ordered digestion process.

Pawrus Singapore - Dog Vomiting Dog Vomiting

In general, symptoms such as the above are easy to cure. We recommend four suggestions to nurse your pet back to the pinkest of health.

• Provide your pet plenty of fresh water to keep him or her hydrated.

• For three to five days, offer a therapeutic pet food (which can often be obtained at your veterinarian's office or at pet supply stores) formulated for GI problems.

• Slowly introduce an ever-increasing amount of the previously given "regular" food over a period of three to five days (or based on the instructions of your veterinarian) until your pet is back on his or her "regular" diet.

• If your pet should begin vomiting at any point, consult your veterinarian immediately.

4. Vitamin Enrichment

Many people take supplements to enhance their daily life, be it to lose weight, to counteract diseases or to alleviate pain and ailments. Not surprisingly, they are likely to give them to their pets too.

Most dogs receive a complete and balanced diet - including necessary vitamins and minerals - from commercially processed dog food, according to the FDA. Dogs fed a homemade diet may need supplements. It’s absolutely critical, but it should be done to match the dog’s diet. In practicality, you can’t just create a meal and give your dog a vitamin.

Pawrus Singapore - Pet Vitamins Pet Vitamins - Do we really need it?

The best advice is to check with a veterinarian or nutritionist for help in determining what, if anything, is needed. This creates the starting point of the requirements of vitamins for our pets. How much is needed? Consequentially, how much is enough?

Just like humans, dogs and cats require a balanced diet that comprises of the key building blocks that powers our everyday life – carbohydrates, protein and fat. If they are already eating a complete and balanced diet and they are healthy, there is absolutely no need for supplementation for your pets.

A recommended amount for pet owners to take note would be to make up for any nutritional deficiency that your pet might be facing. For example, for a puppy, if he is fed a completely RAW diet, it would be prudent to include joint and digestive supplements, as the growth stage of a puppy increases exponentially from adolescents to adulthood. The digestive enzymes also helps to break down the RAW barf much easier and prevent less protein loss from the food consumed.

In another scenario, if the puppy is on food that does not provide enough vitamins for them in their daily meals (e.g. home cooked diet), Kala Health Vitalmix contains 21 amino acids, 11 minerals and 14 vitamins. But what makes Vitalmix more effective than other multi-vitamin supplements on the market, is that it also contains a carefully selected blend of amino-acids. These building blocks for the synthesis of proteins are quickly assimilated to make up the common shortages in commercial pet foods.

For older pets, it is recommended to reduce the amount of vitamins that are taken in by the dog and cat, as they are less active and require less vitamins to sustain their daily bodily functions. As such, Kala Health Geriatrix contains nineteen vitamins and minerals, and eighteen amino acids for the older pet to promote immunity and foster long-term health, deliver optimum nutrition and aid older animals to live a long and active life. The geriatric formula contains effective antioxidants plus Ester-C, a superior form of Vitamin C that does not cause acidity problems. Bovine liver powder (from Argentina) is a natural source of amino acids. The tasty, chewable tablets are designed to allow quick and complete assimilation of the nutrients into the body.
